Phase 1 delivered a £9.8m traditional new build children’s wing and family space, featuring nine ensuite bedrooms equipped for palliative care. Built with block and stone, the stone façade was locally quarried to ensure a perfect match with the surrounding community’s design. Under the block and stone exterior is a two-storey steel frame with a pitched tiled roof.

Phase 2 included a further £8.6m investment to refurbish and extend the Whitbey Lodge teenage wing.

Phase 2A seen the completion of the wellbeing wing, with spaces for consultation, treatment and offices with storage for staff. As part of the treatment space is an immersive 360 media/sensory room and soft play den.

Phase 2B was the extension of Whitbey Lodge, providing teenage kids bedrooms, meeting spaces, open plan offices with hot desking, a commercial kitchen and social courtyard with a BBQ area and pergola. The Courtyard leads onto a stargazing area, and indoor cinema area, resin bound walking routes and event space, with increased parking areas. Externally is a gas enclosure that feeds the building for the gas piped bedrooms. All of the bedrooms have a private en-suite with a treatment bath and hoist, and every bed has sensory projector and piped gas

Phase 2B includes an education block, incorporating a sensory area, hydrotherapy pool, gaming zone, recording studio, and wellbeing centre. The hydrotherapy pool has been designed with accessibility and safety at heart, offering children comfort, relief and special moments with their family.

Solar Photovoltaic technology was integrated into the design of the building as part of the roofing and as side panels attached to the side of the building. Air source heat pumps were also installed and connected to the building’s heating system, powering the underfloor heating.

Known by the Martin House community as ‘THE BUILD’, this project set out to provide more than just a hospice upgrade, but a place of comfort, care and lasting memories.

Over 3 phases and months of skilled work, the site was extended and transformed inside and out by Meldrum Construction.
