The Green Room
Project Description
Meldrum Facilities successfully delivered The Green Room, a contemporary new bar within Newcastle’s Theatre Royal, located at 11 Market Street on the former DatBar site. The transformation forms part of the Theatre’s wider vision to enhance the overall visitor experience.
The entire project was completed in just four months from inception to completion, with a highly efficient six-week onsite construction period. Works began in April 2025, starting with the removal of existing fixtures and fittings, and progressing swiftly and smoothly through fit-out and final decoration. The team were also supported by Meldrum Building Services.
Situated within a Grade I listed building, the project required exceptional care and sensitivity by the team. Meldrum managed all works with minimal disruption to the public and on-going theatre operations, navigating the challenges of working in a protected heritage setting while delivering high-quality results on a tight programme.
The scheme includes innovative design elements, most notably a dramatic central lighting raft, all brought to life through the collaborative efforts of MawsonKerr Architects and Design North. Specialist products and materials were specified and shipped from across Europe.
The Green Room project has added a vibrant, all-day social venue to one of Newcastle’s most iconic buildings, blending heritage with modern hospitality and reaffirming the Theatre Royal’s role as a cultural and civic destination.
