The little theatre is Gateshead’s only theatre and was built during World War II. Dating back to 1943, the theatre has remained in constant use throughout the period to date. Over the years subsequent expansions have taken place to accommodate for the continuing success and growth of the business.

Meldrum were instructed to carry out a roof top extension on the existing theatre auditorium for the value of £365,000. Our Civil and Structural engineering company supplied and installed the underpinning foundations, below ground drainage, supply and installation of steel beams (including the design of steel connections), circular steel staircase and external works; consisting of hard and soft landscape. Our construction delivery arm oversaw the whole modernisation and construction of the works including the new studio, refurbishment of the toilets at first floor and mechanical and electrical upgrade. All works carried out conformed to the existing art deco façade as specified by the client.

• Localised damp proofing
• Replacement of damp effected timber
• Brick stitching
• Replacement of beam ceiling

The site was confined by two busy roadways to the front and side, with a small service lane situated at the rear. With very little available space available for storage or site cabins, the team had to plan activities meticulously.
