In an attempt to improve the area’s commercial appeal Middlesbrough Council appointed Meldrum Civil and Structural Engineering to refurbish the existing public external area at Exchange Square. The works aim to create a positive first impression of Middlesbrough for those arriving by rail. With perfect timing as the statue of founding father, Henry Bolckow celebrates its 140^th birthday.

We’re delighted to be involved in this heritage project. It’s important for us to preserve the history behind our towns as it adds character, and distinctiveness to the place, region or community and hence provides a sense of identity. Heritage preservation projects also support­­­­ sustainability by wasting fewer resources, therefore lowering our carbon footprint.

Key Features:-

• Enhancing the look of the square to create an inviting space with hard surface upgrades, trees and planting, & new street furniture.
• Cleaning and restoring the grade II-listed Henry Bolckow statue and stone heads – by St Astier.
• Complementing the architecture and character of the Conservation Area.

Civils Works:-

• Hard landscaping fully refurbished
• Bespoke furniture fitted
• Protection of the square
• Coping stones fitted

Fabrication:-

Handrail fabrication and fitting.

Special requirements – Bespoke benches ordered, taking 14 weeks to arrive. Protection of the existing monument and shrubbery.

In-house staff skill set – Our in-house staff carried out the groundwork for paving, installed service ducts and our building services team installed the lighting and electrical works.
