Meldrum Construction were appointed main contractor on the redevelopment of a brownfield site located in Bedlington Town Centre after the closure of another construction company.

The aim of the scheme was to reposition Bedlington as a retail destination, improving amenities and giving local people greater choice. Designed to incorporate strong links with the existing shopping areas.

Meldrum have created a new terrace of four retail units with the upper floor designed to provide six new apartments in a mixture of 1 & 2 bedrooms which is available for rental from Advance Northumberland Homes. Delivered to conservation specifications while introducing a contemporary building that respects the area’s heritage.

Internal areas created:-

  • 3 x one-bedroom apartments
  • 3 x two-bedroom apartments
  • 2 communal connecting stairwells
  • 3 x shell/core retail units with lighting and decoration, ready for tenant fit-out.
  • The development has incorporated sustainable technologies, including air source heat pumps (ASHPs), all works are compliant with local planning and conservation guidelines.

Public Realm – Boulevard Connection

  • Construction of a new public boulevard linking Bedlington High Street to Schalksmuhle Road.
  • Works to include paving, lighting, seating, planting, and any necessary drainage.
  • Landscaping and street furniture to align with the council’s conservation and urban design strategy.
  • Surface finishes and layout to create an accessible, attractive thoroughfare integrated with the new development.

Sustainability Features: Integration of low-carbon heating via ASHP, energy-efficient lighting and insulation and Use of sustainable building materials where possible.

Conservation & Design Compliance: All external detailing, materials, and construction methods comply with conservation guidelines and approvals. We also used sympathetic materials in façades (e.g., heritage brick, stone detailing, traditional roofing materials).
