Castleford College

CASE STUDIES

Meldrum Construction were appointed main contractor on a new two storey Further Education building for teaching of advanced construction trade skills at Castleford College. The extension of the existing site now has an external deliveries yard, carparking and covered external area for wet trades skills.

Wood workshop: The new wood workshop was designed and delivered as a specialist teaching environment that supports both beginner and advanced joinery skills. This included installation of high-capacity dust extraction, durable impact-resistant wall finishes, enhanced acoustic separation from adjoining teaching spaces, and integrated power distribution suitable for bench-mounted and freestanding woodworking machinery. Clear circulation routes, safety zoning and compliant guarding were incorporated to ensure safe operation for learners and staff, aligned with FE sector best practice.

Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) Installation Workshop: A dedicated environment for electrical, plumbing, and building services training, complete with containment systems, practice rigs, and safe-access cable management.

Steelwork / Fabrication Zone: If included within the workshop mix, this would support welding, fabrication or metalwork skills, complete with extraction, fire-rated partitions, and specialist equipment infrastructure.

General Construction Skills Space: A flexible, multi-disciplinary training area for modular construction tasks, stud wall building, surveying exercises, and practical assessments.

Classrooms & Digital Learning Suites: Purpose built rooms supporting theory-based teaching, digital construction learning (eg BIM, CAD), and blended technical education.

External Deliveries and Logistics Yard: A specialised area enabling material deliveries, storage, manual handling training, and safe segregation between pedestrian and vehicle movements, essential in a skills-based environment.

Staff & Support Spaces: Offices, breakout areas, prep rooms and welfare accommodation positioned to provide supervision of practical areas and efficient staff workflows.
